Providence PARK(ing) Day to Feature Temporary Protected Bike Lane on Broadway this Friday!

Providence PARK(ing) Day is THIS FRIDAY, September 19, 2014. Volunteers are needed to help with the temporary bike lane installation, the first in the state!

PARK(ing) Day Providence invites Providence residents and businesses to temporarily repurpose their on-street or lot parking spots as something other than parking–a park, an outdoor library, cafe seating, a musical ensemble, an art show, a mini-farmers’ market, you name it. The organizers (Transport Providence and the RI ASLA) hope that as in other cities’ Park(ing) Days, some of these temporary fixtures will become so popular that they’ll become permanent. Check out some photos from last year, and check out the PARK(ing) Day site for a full list of parklets!

This year, PARK(ing) Day will feature 32 parklets in Downtown, the West Side, and the East Side in addition to a protected bike lane on west-bound Broadway, which RIBike is helping sponsor.

Cool cities everywhere have been installing temporary protected lanes to demonstrate how awesome they are. This Friday is a great opportunity for Providence residents, visitors, and businesses to see the promise of protected lanes!

Installing .7 miles of protected lane won’t be easy, and the organizers of PARK(ing) Day and RIBike could use your help! Volunteers are needed for the following this Friday:

  • 6-7am – Bike lane setup. We’ll be setting up plant barriers for the bike lane and stenciling with spray chalk.
  • 7-9am – Parklet setup. Help direct parklet designers positioned near the bike lane.
  • 10am-5pm – Riding in the bike lane! Take a break from work to take a spin, visit the parklets, and support the businesses along Broadway. (The east-bound bike lane will remain functional as well, with some parklets positioned on that side of the street.) We encourage anyone who is able to organize a ride with coworkers, friends, or the public! (If you’re organizing a ride that you’d like RIBike to promote, please let us know!)
  • 5-6pm – Bike lane breakdown. Help pick up and move the plant barriers.
  • All day – Promotion! Take photos or videos of the bike lane, post about the lane on social media, and talk with riders about the lane and bike infrastructure in Providence. Use the tag #PARKingDayPVD!
If you are able to help with anything, please contact the PARK(ing) Day organizers at james.p.kennedy@gmail.com or RIBike at jen@ribike.org. We also welcome last-minute volunteers on Broadway on Friday!
