RIDOT Begins Maintenance on East Bay Bike Path

June 10, 2009 by RI BIke

Starting this past Tuesday,  I noticed RIDOT crews out working on replacing the decking along the two wooden bridges near the Barrington/Warren town lines.  Later, I noticed an announcement on the RIDOT website: Cyclists along the path from Providence to Bristol already may have encountered construction work on the path. The $350,000 project will involve…  read more

Signs Along the East Bay Bike Path

May 14, 2009 by RI BIke

Over the past few weeks, I’ve come to realize there are a LOT of stop signs missing at the intersections along the East Bay Bike Path.  This got me to thinking… before someone from DEM notices this and just replaces the signs, should we approach them and ask to have a study done to determine…  read more

Montreal introduces ambitious bicycle-sharing program (05/14/2009)

May 14, 2009 by RI BIke

Montreal welcomed North America’s first large-scale bicycle-sharing program yesterday with a flight of 3,000 specially designed bicycles distributed among 300 closely spaced stations. Bixi, the bicycle-sharing system, operates around a computer chip-based, solar-powered, WiFi-enabled base station. Logistically, the use of solar power makes it easier to add base stations around the city if the demand…  read more

Broadway bike lanes: saved! (?)

May 13, 2009 by RI BIke

Good neighborhood meeting tonight on the Broadway streetscaping project, though sparsely attended (despite heavy promotion by the city, West Broadway Neighborhood Association, and Providence Bicycle Coalition). Most comments were related to heavy truck traffic and speeding. Not one beef about the bike lane component of the project. Councilman Lombardi appears to favor it. It looks…  read more

Three Days to Go…

May 13, 2009 by RI BIke

We are just three days away from the 2009 Bike to Work festivities and the word on the street is, what little bicycle infrastructure we have, isn’t ready: Overall the commute was better than it had been for the last few years. I have ridden to work very little since the I-195 path closure. It…  read more

BICYCLES: Why can’t Johnny ride? (05/12/2009 – Energy and Environment Daily

May 12, 2009 by RI BIke

Evan Lehmann, E&E reporter Schoolchildren are being reintroduced to an old concept. It is called “active transportation.” Students in a handful of cities involved in this experiment probably don’t think much about the carbon emissions they are preventing as they navigate their bicycles toward beeping devices that count their rides to school. Nor do they…  read more

Broadway’s bicycle lanes – we hardly knew ye?

May 6, 2009 by RI BIke

In NYC this summer, Mayor Bloomberg will shut down a section of Broadway in midtown to become a bike-ped paradise. But here in the “Creative Capital”, the long-planned bike lanes on Broadway are in danger of being killed before the paint hits the ground: rumor has it that a well-placed member of the City Council…  read more
