design issues in Phase 3 of South County Bike Path

September 22, 2010 by RI BIke

Bob Votava, who is head of DOTWatch and Friends of the William C O’Neill Bike Path (aka South County bike path), reports a possible problem with ongoing phase 3 construction with regard to the historic railroad tunnel underneath Route 1 that is being used to extend the path.  The current design apparently will fill a lot of the tunnel, thus losing its historic character and an opportunity to enhance the inside with art.  Bob has written to the DOT to try to get the design altered and I have his correspondence available to anyone interested.

Unfortunately, I’m not at all familiar with the area, though I am asking Director Lewis to take a look himself at the issues Bob has raised. I hope someone who does know the area can get in touch and help Bob and the DOT get the best possible design.
