On his first day of work three months ago, Alex Krogh-Grabbe, Program Director of the Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition, told Governor Raimondo’s staff that the George Redman Linear Park must be completed. Today, the long-delayed project connecting Providence and East Providence was officially dedicated before dozens of bicyclists and the entire congressional delegation.
In the day’s remarks, the delegation, Governor Raimondo, and the Mayors of both cities affirmed the importance of building safe and comfortable bike infrastructure across the state. Mayor Elorza of Providence even commented that on his regular bike commute, he beats his security detail to the office by several minutes, and that bicycling is the best way to get around the state.
A robust bike culture is vital to Rhode Island’s economic success. Bike infrastructure generates more jobs per dollar spent than any other type of infrastructure investment. To attract and retain millenials, it is also vital to cultivate the active quality of life that they look for. Furthermore, the return on investment from bike paths due to reduced healthcare expenditures alone is 3:1.
The Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition works to make bicycling in Rhode Island safer, more comfortable, and more accessible. Through advocacy, events, and convening of partner organizations, the Coalition seeks to improve the health, economy, and mobility of the state through growing bike culture and creating a connected network of bike routes.
