Friday: Celebrate Bikes on Your Way to Work in These 3 Rhode Island Cities

May 15, 2019 by RI BIke

Bike to Work Day is the origin of all National Bike Month events.  Started in 1956, this day is a time to try out commuting to work by bike, even if that’s not something you’d normally do.  This year, Bike to Work Day is on Friday, May 17th.  Celebrations will be held around the state that morning. In Providence, Newport, and Peace Dale, bike commuters in these cities can pick up some breakfast and meet each other as well as take part in giveaways, prizes, demos, and opportunities to meet with local bicycle organizations.

Providence Bike to Work Day • 7:00 – 9:00am
Burnside Park, Providence

Join the Rhode Island Bicycle Coalition in Burnside Park to celebrate Bike to Work Day!

The morning will feature lots of resources, giveaways, and information from bike shops and organizations around Rhode Island. We’ll have breakfast & coffee for you to fuel your commute. So grab your bike & your co-workers and #bikeToWork!

Newport Bike to Work Day • 7:00 – 9:00am
Newport City Hall, Newport

Gather for Bike Newport’s annual Bike Commuter Breakfast from 7-9 a.m. at Newport City Hall (rain location is Bike Newport’s office across the street, at 62 Broadway).  At 4:30 p.m., head over to Newport City Hall for bike-friendly progress reports and to award the Bike-Friendly Business of the Year. At 5 p.m., join a group bike ride around downtown!

Peace Dale Bike to Work Day • 7:00 – 9:00am
Railroad St, Peace Dale-Wakefield, South Kingstown

Bike decorating, Stedmans Bike Shop service station, RIPTA bus with bike loading demo, Music, Prizes, and Group rides to local schools

Concerns? Here are some tips!

It can be incredibly daunting to bike to work — or school, or the grocery store! — if you’ve never done it. Asking a friend or colleague who already bikes to work is a great way to get started.  Groups like Women Bike RI are a great place to seek a commuting friend — as is joining and posting in our Discussion group!

The League has also put together this handy set of tips addressing common concerns, including being out of shape (Take a JUMP bike!), distance, bike quality, and weather:
