Three Days to Go…

May 13, 2009 by RI BIke

We are just three days away from the 2009 Bike to Work festivities and the word on the street is, what little bicycle infrastructure we have, isn’t ready:

Overall the commute was better than it had been for the last few years. I have ridden to work very little since the I-195 path closure. It was OK until I got to the bike specific accommodations. Two days before “Bike to Work Day” and the bike lane for commuters south of the city is in terrible shape. I hope it gets swept soon, it is a shame to build these facilities and then let them deteriorate.

The bicycle specific infrastructure being referred to in this email excerpt is Allens Ave.  I’ll certainly see what I can do to make some noise over the next couple of days to see if this can’t get swept before Friday, but I’m not holding my breath.  If you have some free time, I’d encourage you to contact the RIDOT Maintenance Division (222-2378).

UPDATE as of the commute home:

It looks like the efforts of the Prov. Bike Coalition and Bike to Brown got at least the north bound side of Allens Ave. swept.

Clear sailing on the way home.

If the other side isn’t already swept, hopefully, it will be by the end of day tomorrow.  Thanks to RIDOT for getting out to deal with this today!
