Cycle Tracks: May 9, 2016

May 9, 2016 by RI BIke

Welcome to Cycle Tracks, RIBike’s somewhat-biweekly bike advocacy email newsletter.

May is National Bike Month, so here’s your rundown of what’s going on in RI this month.

Tonight at 6:00pm is our monthly bike advocacy meetup, at Flatbread Company off Thayer Street like it usually is. But this time it’s Bike Month! Hope to see you there!

Tour de Tentacle is almost here! Have you signed up to save Rhode Island from tentacled horrors yet? Register by yourself or with a team, and come to The Arcade in Providence by 6:00pm this Friday the 13th to participate in this interactive bike scavenger hunt around the city.

Bike to Beer is back! Come to the first casual bike-themed social of 2016, this Wednesday at Ogie’s Trailer Park, 5-8pm. You don’t have to bike, and you don’t have to drink beer, but it’s called Bike to Beer, and we’d love to see you there!

There are so many bike rides happening this weekend! Spokeswomen, Cafe Tour, WRWC’s history bike ride, and a group ride in Newport! All the information on these and other Bike Month events is at ribike.org/bikemonth.

Every week of Bike Month, our fantastic partners on Aquidneck Island, Bike Newport, are putting on multiple events. They’ve got classes, rides, and open shops. Check it all out on their website.

SAVE THE DATE: Two cornerstone events of Bike Month are coming up in just under two weeks: Bike to Work Dayis Friday, May 20th, and BikeFest is Saturday, May 21st. Hope to see you at both!

The Governor’s budget included a proposal for a $35 million Green Economy bond referendum, including $10 million for bike paths! This is what the Paths to Progress coalition has been fighting for. Now we need the House to keep that $35 million in there despite powerful voices calling to reduce it. Contact your State Rep or write a letter to the Projo telling them how important this bond is!

Don’t look now, but the National Bike Challenge, the summer-long friendly competition to encourage ourselves to bike more, started on May 1! Geoff Williams has so many points.

RIBike is going to hold a training in Rhode Island this summer to certify participants as bicycling instructors via the League of American Bicyclists Smart Cycling curriculum. Interested in getting certified? Let us know! We also have two full scholarships available specifically for women of color. Interested? Know anyone? Email us!
