Cycle Tracks: October 2016

Cycle Tracks: October 2016

Welcome to Cycle Tracks, RIBike’s monthly bike advocacy email newsletter.

Welcome back to our regular email updates on making Rhode Island more bike-friendly. Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to join the coalition if you haven’t yet!

Feature: Annual Meeting

Every year around this time we have our Annual Meeting, an open event where we share where we’ve been and where we’re going! This year, we decided to also make it fun. It’s going to be at Cleverhood on West Fountain Street in Providence. We’ll have beverages from Revival Brewing, light snacks and more! 6-8pm, next Tuesday October 18th. We’ll have some exciting news to share, so we hope to see you there!

Feature: Bike to Beer with Cirque Mechanics

You’ve heard of FirstWorks, the nonprofit that does a lot of organizing for PVDFest and generally brings world class performances to Rhode Island? We’re teaming up with them on a Bike to Beer, on October 28th, in conjunction with Pedal Punk, the mashup of bikes and Cirque du Soleil performing in Providence the following day. Come get beers with the performers! 5-8pm at The Malted Barley in Providence.

Bonus Feature: Tour de Tentacle

Did you miss the first Tour de Tentacle in May? It was awesome. There’s another one happening on October 30th. Come experience the Lovecraftian bike scavenger hunt for yourself. Discounted bike rentals available.

Tour de Tentacle needs volunteers! If you want to be a costumed cultist directing adventurers through the weird scavenger hunt, write us a spooky note. Or a regular one.

The Fountain Street buffered bike lane in downtown Providence is coming very soon! If you want to help teach people not to park in it, let us know.

We’re also working on launching our education program. If you want to teach people about how to be smart about biking, we could use your help!

Another volunteering opportunity through the end of October is helping out at Bike Valet, the free valet bike parking program we run. We could always use a few more people to lend a hand; email us if you’re interested in donating 2 hours on a Saturday morning sometime.

Additionally, we have a number of programs that need volunteer leaders to really get off the ground. One of those is collecting & consolidating data about how many people are biking in the state. Also, the event series we run need volunteers to happen. The bike movement in the state can only excel with engaged people making things happen. Let us know if you want to help.

As always, you can see what bike events are coming up on our event calendar.

  • As noted above, our Annual Meeting is next Tuesday, October 18th, at Cleverhood’s location on West Fountain Street in Providence, 6-8pm.
  • The next meeting of Providence’s Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Commission (BPAC) is next Wednesday, October 19th, 4:45-6:15pm.
  • The Bike to Beer in collaboration with FirstWorks is on October 28th at Malted Barley in Providence, 5-8pm.
  • The East Coast Greenway Alliance is holding their annual summit in Providence in November! There are several cool events you should think about attending: first, there’s a walking & biking tour of the Greenway on Friday, 10/11 from 2:30 – 4:30. After that, at 5:30 Friday evening, there’s a reception. Then on Saturday, starting at 10am, you can go to the summit itself, and hear all about the status of the Maine-to-Florida path network.
  • Every Saturday, there’s a casual ride called the Cafe Tour on the East Bay Bike Path to brunch and back!
  • Every First Wednesday at 5:00pm, NBX Providence hosts a flat tire repair clinic. The next one is November 2nd.

Thanks for fighting for better biking, and we hope to see you at some of these events!
