2013 Ride of Silence

May 9, 2013 by RI BIke

Looking for another Bike Month event?  Come join the Ride of Silence, a tribute to fallen cyclists and a peaceful way to raise cycling awareness.  Riders should assemble at 6:45pm (7pm departure) at the Nelson Fitness Center Brown University, Hope and Cushing Street.  Route will follow Hope Street to Waterman then onto River Rd up Irving to Blackstone to its north end and then back down Blackstone to Angell then onto Arlington to Lloyd and finish back on Hope.  From the organizers of the 2013 ride:

THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET
On the third Wednesday of May, at 7 PM local around the world in over 300 locations, cyclists  will take to the roads in a silent protest of the carnage taking place on the streets.  Annually over 600 cyclists are killed and 51000 injured.  Among them:  Paige Hicks, Brown ’11 was killed in 2010  riding across the US.  Michael Strickland was killed cycling in Newport in March 2012.

Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclists Larry Schwartz was killed by a passing bus mirror on an empty road.

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride.

The ride hopes to raise cycling awareness during bike safety month to motorists, police, traffic engineers, insurance companies, and city officials. The ride is also a chance to mourn, in funeral procession style, those who have already been killed.

You can help spread the word by either passing along the Ride of Silence press release or hand out the Ride of_Silence_poster.
