National Merger

In case you haven’t heard, it was announced yesterday that

initial steps [have been taken] to unify three national bicycling organizations – the Alliance, the League and Bikes Belong – to create a powerful, dynamic new voice for cyclists at the local, state and national level.

You can read more about the merger on the Alliance for Biking and Walking site, the Bikes Belong website, and the League of American Bicyclists website.  It’s a tumultuous time in DC right now, hopefully, this merger will help build a stronger single group.  Thoughts?

I am always very mixed on mergers. I feel like it is too likely for there to be 5 five presidents when groups combine. But, maybe this will be different. Lord knows bicycling could use stronger advocacy.

Honestly, I think this is a good move, as it's seemed we've had too many National Level organizations advocating for bicyclists. It will simplify messaging about national issues clearer and less spammy, which will help with keeping from exhausting recipients with the deluge of action requests.

I'm curious about the nature of the new organization, as it will be blending organizations with different organizational structures and memberships and somewhat different functions around bicycle and pedestrian advocacy.
