URGENT: bicycle lockers need a home!

RIPTA will remove the Kennedy Plaza bike lockers this afternoon or early tomorrow. They’ve sat unused since at least 2001 – thousands or people have walked by them without even knowing what they are!

RIPTA has reached out to RIBike to find a new home for them.  We need to find a taker this afternoon.  If no one steps forward, they’ll be sold for scrap.  What a shame it would be if the only bike lockers in the State of Rhode Island would be sold for their scrap value, after sitting unused for a decade…

There are 5 units.  Each is double-sided, meaning storage for 10 bikes total.

Get in touch (eric (at) greenway (dot) org) if you want them.  And please forward this post to those who might want them.  Delivery is apparently available within a reasonable distance of Kennedy Plaza.

Here’s another shot:

I don’t know if RIPTA is including the little green roof in the deal.

Too bad. Did anyone know they were there? A shame they weren't labeled (that I can see).

Oh man, I had no idea these were downtown!

Since no one was allowed to use them, RIPTA had no reason to label them, or draw any attention to them. They've been padlocked since the day they were installed, I believe. Post 9/11 fears. Current manufacturers of bike lockers make them with screens or windows so that security officials can see the contents.

If all you need is a screen to make them post 9/11 worthy, seems like something that could be retrofitted to these bike lockers. I can't believe we aren't able to find a home for these!

While RIPTA's concerns over the last decade were security-related, that's not why they are now being removed. They wish to add another bus stop , and the lockers occupy space where they want to put benches. Ironic given that RIPTA's only mentions in the news lately are regarding cutbacks in service!

I had no idea they were bike lockers. What a bummer. RISD would use them, or maybe Brown? JWU?
