New Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge in Warren

broken-bridge - Source: http://eastbaymedia.static.adqic.com/uploads/inline_3/1286372897_96af.jpgIn October of this year, Hugh Cole Elementary School, Kickemuit Middle School, and the Town of Warren received a joint Safe Routes to School Grant for $349,000.  The grant is

for bike path bridge construction, crosswalk, bike racks, signage, and various educational and encouragement activities

A big percentage of this grant ($338,000), will go towards building a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the “broken bridge” spanning the Kickemuit River.  This bridge will provide a vital link between the West side of the Kickemuit River and the newly opened Warren Bike Path.  This bike path, while currently rather short, is in very close proximity to both Hugh Cole Elementary School and Kickemuit Middle School.  Completing this bridge would provide for a much safer route for kids wanting to ride their bicycles to school from the West side of the Kickemuit River.

Unfortunately, a recent article posted on EastbayRI.com suggests that approximately 10 – 12 neighbors in close proximity of the suggested bike path route have formed a group called Concerned Citizens for the Warren Bike Path Extension.  They cite reasons ranging from the danger posed to young riders, dumping them out on Metacolm Avenue to increased runoff and pollution on their properties.

This could be a very valuable connector for the cyclists in Warren.  We would like to continue following these developments and provide support.  Is there anyone who lives in Warren who would be willing to do this on our behalf?  If so, please contact us.

The formed group that are against the bike path bought their property well after the easement was in place. They knew, or should have known, that the potential of the bike path was to go behind their properties.

If parties agree, there is a potential alternate route that may be available, however, that is not a sure thing.

Nothing seems to be happening with the extension over the bridge, and it's already 2014. Is this going to get done? If so, when??

Anything new on the bike path extension? What is holding this up?
