Amtrak Bicycle Survey

Do you ride Amtrak with your bike already?  Are you thinking of taking a trip with your bike?  Considering a family vacation that would be easier if you could just ride the train with your bike?  Then I encourage you to take the Amtrack Bicycle Survey.  Now is the time to show Amtrak there is demand for better accomodations for bicycles on trains!

UPDATE: After reading this more closely, the survey appears to be focused solely on the Amtrak Capitol Limited route.  Still, a good response on this route may well encourage them to put out surveys for other routes.

Sorry I missed this post a few years back. I'm interested in doing more muti-day bike touring along the New England coast, combining cycling with rail and ferry. Ferries are generally very bike friendly. But, rail is inconsistent. Amtrak's Downeaster line (Boston to Portland, ME — and to Brunswick, ME starting later this yr) is very good with bikes. Amtrak's Northeast Regional route not! Commuter Rail is bike friendly off peak commute times.

Interested in knowing whether there are any advocary efforts in this area, especially re: Amtrak's NE Regional route. Thanks!

    Ken,

There hasn't been a lot of advocacy, at least not on our front. However, your timing is interesting. There is an MBTA public hearing coming up on Feb. 27th to discuss cutting back their service. While not Amtrak, this is a vital connector between PVD and Boston. MBTA is looking at significant financial shortfalls and are looking to cut ALL service on the weekends. Currently, MBTA allows full size bikes on their off peak trains, which includes all weekend. This is an important way for cyclists to be able to get up to Boston for the day, while being car free.

Thanks Mark! I'll ck out the time/location of that MBTA hearing – might be in Boston that day anyways. The economics of wknd use might justify some cut back (I've seen many largely empty trains on wknds). But, hopefully, they won't go to the other extreme!

Actually, the meeting is in PVD. I updated the calendar listing to make this clear.
