Some news about the Woonasquatucket River Greenway project that came across the NBW mailing list:

It seems that the Mayor of Johnston wants to to prevent the
continuation of the Woonasquatucket Greenway into and through his

He has discounted the input of non-residents and only considers the
opinions of voters – right now the nimbys along the proposed greenway.

If you are a resident of Johnston we need you to keep on top of this
situation. If you have the inclination you can write or email the
Mayor about this issue. We need to counter the influence of the nay
sayers who fear that marauding thieves will plunder their
neighborhoods on bikes.

I wasn’t in the area at the time the EBBP was built, but from what I hear, these concerns are similar to those raised prior to the EBBP.  I doubt there are many people who now look at the EBBP as a blight on their neighborhood.

If you live in Johnston, here is your call to action.

    Johnston is the root of all evil. Home of Bilray demolition (destroyers of the Pawtucket/Fall River train station and the Grove street school) and Carpionatto.

    Johnston is in total violation of Federal and State law on providing bicycling infrastructure along major arteries, i.e., RI-5 and RI-6 are unsafe. The parallel bike bypass for RI-6 is Central Pike, but that isn't particularly safe either. You have to go North into Greenville or South into Cranston to find safer parallels. RI-5 is often hostile in spots, with 4 undivided lanes and no shoulder. There are hardly any acceptable roads throughout the town. Even the major parks and schools are bike inaccessible. It's totally outrageous.

    What ought to happen is a class action suit against Johnson, something long past due. Johnston joins Providence as two of the five worst places to ride in RI, along with Newport, North Providence, and parts of Warwick (notably Airport Rd, East Ave, Jefferson Blvd, Post Rd, and Warwick Ave, none of which have adequate workarounds, although kudos for Warwick's Neighborhood Bike Routes through Conimicut and Governor Francis).

    And why isn't RIDOT fining these five, or at least advising them, on compliance? Shame on RIDOT!
