10 Things We’re Thankful For about Rhode Island Bicycling

November 26, 2015 by RI BIke

1. Citizen transportation activism in Rhode Island is as strong as it’s ever been.

Our coalition is growing each day, and our voice for safer, more comfortable, and more accessible bicycling is getting stronger every week. Join the party!

2. It’s Cyclo-cross season…

…and there are two awesome cross events happening in the next 10 days: the NBX Gran Prix at Goddard Park in Warwick next weekend and the Rhode Island premiere of For the Love of Mud, the December installment of our winter film series!

3. We have some of the greatest bike paths around.

The state’s tourism agencies are increasingly promoting these emerging visitor attractions, and we have them in our backyard all the time! That’s pretty cool.

4. Providence’s mayor, Jorge Elorza, bikes to work every day…

…and really gets that Providence needs better bike infrastructure to attract the sort of Millennial talent that bring jobs to Rhode Island’s economy. And he’s working with us to grow the bike culture! Come out to Bike the Night next Thursday evening 12/3 to join the fun.

5. We are one of the densest states in the country…

…which makes it easy to get around by bike! In bigger states, the distances sometimes make biking less feasible, but here, you can get across the state in practically no time.

6. RIPTA is an excellent partner…

…providing easy-to-use bike racks on every bus in the state! That makes it super easy to bike part of the way even for longer commutes.

7. We have awesome partner organizations across the state!

To name a few of the groups that are doing fantastic work: Bike Newport, Recycle-a-Bike, Narragansett Bay Wheelmen, East Coast Greenway Alliance, and the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council. They’re all great, and if you like bikes, you should check out each and every one!

8. Even our Governor gets biking!

Besides championing the common-sense truck tolls that increase the amount of funding available for bike infrastructure, the Raimondo administration has also recently signed on to the multi-state Transportation & Climate Initiative, through which 5 northeast states pledge to work together to reduce our emissions for transportation.

9. We have awesome women leading biking efforts across the state!

Come hear two of them at our monthly BikeTalk this coming Wednesday at AS220.

10. It’s easy to get in touch with government officials…

…because we’re such a small state. That makes it super easy to get in touch with the Governor’s office, your municipal leaders, and the General Assembly to tell them how much you want complete streets and our awesome bike paths to be completed.

Happy Thanksgiving! If you’re looking to work off some of those calories, go for a bike ride tomorrow in the warm weather!
