Join the BIKE NEWPORT TEAM at the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover

In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a huge AROUND-THE-WORLD SAILING RACE coming to Newport in May! Bike Newport is one of the members of the volunteer-driven Sustainability Committee, Transportation Committee and with an exhibit in the Exploration Zone for the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. Along with local environmental organizations Sailors for the Sea, 11th Hour Racing, RI-DEM, Fort Adams Trust, Clean Ocean Access, Sail Newport, and Newport Biodiesel, we are aiming to make the Newport stopover the most environmentally responsible port of the whole race! To do this, the stopover will deploy numerous strategies that reduce waste, educate attendees, encourage alternative transportation, use environmentally friendly products, and much more. These strategies all require a team of dedicated individuals, who can help the stopover meet its goal and help make Newport a leader in environmental sustainability! But we can’t do it without your help. How can you join the Bike Newport Team at the Volvo Ocean Race? All volunteers for Bike Newport have to register through the Bike Newport volunteer portal. Please do so! Individual tasks include: Bike Parking and helping in the Bike Newport exhibit in the Exploration Zone. Once in the volunteer portal, you can also choose the times and dates to volunteer that work best with your schedule. Please commit to as many shifts as you can shifts between May 12-20th, so hurry and get the shifts you want! ALL shifts need filling so don’t hold back  Please sign up ASAP so we’re not scrambling for help last minute.  Something thoughts to help you choose your shifts: On Thurs 17th – Sunday 20th there are boat races from 1-3pm to watch On Sunday 20th, the boats leave for Cardiff so there’ll be a big farewell. Sunday at 6pm ALL volunteers are invited to a huge thank you party hosted by Volvo and Sail Newport. SIGN UP HERE! Volvo require you to fill out a volunteer form, have a photocopy of your driver’s license/passport or other state ID (needs to have name and SS#) for a background check. Sail Newport will then submit this to the State Attorney General’s Office where it will remain secure for processing at no cost to you. CLARE HAS THESE AND WILL BE COORDINATING WITH YOU ONCE WE KNOW WHO WE HAVE. ***Volunteers are responsible for bringing their own lunch, there will be snacks, coffee, tea and water available in the Race Village Volunteer Station and water stations, so bring your re-usable mug!  (PLEASE DO NOT BRING SINGLE USE CONTAINERS) Once you sign up we’ll be in touch nearer the time with any more info and potentially a volunteer quick meeting to make sure any questions are answered and everyone know what they’re doing. Thank you in advance. Let’s together represent Bike Newport and show Newport (and the world) what we do best! Ways you can help Sail Newport and the Volvo Ocean Race be sustainable when you join us at the Race Village: 1. Ride a bike, walk, take a water taxi,  or carpool to cut down on emissions.  2. Single-use plastic water bottles are banned from the event. Please bring a reusable water bottle, plenty of filling stations will be available.  3. Skip the straw. Like single-use bottles, plastic straws will not be provided at the event.    4. Recycle your trash and compost food.  Dispose of your trash and food in the properly marked receptacles available around the Race Village. Thank You!  5. VOLUNTEER FOR THE BIKE NEWPORT TEAM  6. Sign the Clean Seas Pledge Please help us spread the word – get your friends, family, roommates, and coworkers in on the sustainability action and direct people to the sign up at the volunteer portal. May

Bike to Work Day is an annual event held on the third Friday in May all around the world promoting bicycling for daily transportation. Here in Newport, we’ve been celebrating Bike to Work Day since 2011. This is the day to leave your car home and put your feet in the pedals. Breathe deep and smile solo, or meet up with your friends and colleagues for a group ride to the office. Know that the chances you’ll arrive smiling are extra high. Biking = happiness. Active transportation leads to productivity. Start the day at Bike Newport’s Bike Commuter Breakfast and end the day with a group ride to the Volvo Ocean Race festivities at Fort Adams State Park.

All activities take place at Eisenhower Park in Washington Square – the historic center of Newport.

7:00-9:00am: Bike Commuter Breakfast provided by Washington Square Cafe & Baking Company, A Market Natural Foods, and Stop & Shop.
3:30pm: Program and award ceremony
5:00pm: 3-mile group ride to the Volvo Ocean Race Newport!

Too far to bike, or over the bridge? Use the dedicated “Park ‘n Bike” lots located at Bike Newport’s office, 437 Broadway, or at the YMCA on Valley Road in Middletown. You can park, hop on your bike, and pedal to  the Bike to Work Day breakfast before continuing to your workplace. Or, use RIPTA’s Rack n’ Ride to get into town from anywhere in the state.

Have you been thinking –  “Wow, I could bike or walk to that meeting and clear my head on the way.” “Oh my, if I had biked here I wouldn’t be stressing this parking search” “Gee, the market really is close by.”? Bike to Work Day is meant to be the day you give it a try and find out what you’ve been missing!

Already a happy transportation cyclist? Use the day to get your friends in the saddle. Share the love!

It’s always an amazing day, and full confirmation of the delight of starting the day on your bike. It’s fun, healthy, invigorating AND makes us more happy and productive. Give it a try and see what you think. Maybe it will become a habit. We hope so!
