In case you hadn’t heard, there’s a huge AROUND-THE-WORLD SAILING RACE coming to Newport in May!

Bike Newport is one of the members of the volunteer-driven Sustainability Committee for the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. Along with local environmental organizations Sailors for the Sea, 11th Hour Racing, Representative Lauren H. Carson, RI-DEM, Fort Adams Trust, Clean Ocean Access, Sail Newport, Newport Biodiesel and the stopover’s sponsor SCA, we are aiming to make the Newport stopover the most environmentally responsible port of the whole race! To do this, the stopover will deploy numerous strategies that reduce waste, educate attendees, encourage alternative transportation, use environmentally friendly products, and much more. These strategies all require a team of dedicated individuals, who can help the stopover meet its goal and help make Newport a leader in environmental sustainability! But we can’t do it without your help. Join the Green Team at the Volvo Ocean Race!

All volunteers for the whole shebang have to register through the Sail Newport volunteer portal. Please do so! There, you can sign up for the Green Team individual tasks, which are:

Waste Educator: To minimize the waste we send to the landfill, we need to ensure spectators use the right bin. Waste Educators will use this opportunity to inform spectators about proper waste management and how waste management can eliminate the need for landfills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and other big benefits.
Bicycle Greeter: Provide bike maps, assistance with parking, and other helpful resources to attendees and those arriving on two wheels.
Educational Signage: Ensure informative environmental signage is in place, engage spectators on the sustainability efforts and inform spectators on proper sustainability practices.
Sustainability Exhibit: Educate and engage VOR spectators on the sustainability efforts underway at the Newport stopover at the Exploration Zone.

Once in the volunteer portal, you can also choose the times and dates to volunteer that work best with your schedule. Commit to three shifts between May 5-17 and get a Green Team t-shirt!

Please help us spread the word – get your friends, family, roommates, and coworkers in on the sustainability action. Feel free to use the graphic below to post on your social media channels, and direct people to the sign up at the volunteer portal.
