Did you know Rhode Island and Massachusetts have draft statewide Bicycle Planning Guides? Massachusetts Department of Transportation has a ‘Draft Municipal Resource Guide For Bikeability,’ and Rhode Island has a draft ‘Bicycle Mobility Plan.’ Give them a read and see the future when all road users are treated equally and we leave car-centric planning behind. These plans share missions: Biking will be a safe, comfortable, and convenient (MA) and safe, fun, and practical (RI) option for everyday travel. They are encouraging and informative documents that assist people in choosing bicycles, and municipalities in planning for bikeable places. Well done, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We hope to see them adopted soon! The post Statewide Bicycle Planning Guides appeared first on Bike Newport.

Yup – that’s bikes as far as the eye can see… It’s a thing of beauty. HUGE shoutout and thanks to the diehard Bike Newport volunteers who are signing roads, and meeting, greeting, and parking 1800 people on bikes every day here at Fort Adams. Neither sun nor heat nor sweat nor grease stops these great folks from getting it done – with a smile! It’s a sight to see. And it’s shattering records. 50% more than our Friday record of 1200 and 20% more than our Saturday record of 1500. HERE’s how we roll – for more Folkfest snaps and videos visit @bikenewportri on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. For more information on how you can bike to Fort Adams for summer events, click here. Another big shoutout to the Newport Police Department who are getting lots of kudos for their good cheer managing all these bikes amidst the traditionalists – aka motorists 🙂 Thanks to Sgt Cortes and the NPD! Ride safe. Ride happy. Always ride to the Folk and Jazz Festivals! The post Hey Hey From Newport Folk Festival appeared first on Bike Newport.

How are you spending Father’s Day? Join us on bikes!

Join Bike Newport and hundreds of cyclists as we ride Newport County’s scenic coastline while celebrating the life and passion of Dr. Elliot Kaminitz. The third annual Elliot Kaminitz Father’s Day Ride will be held on June 21, 2015 at 8:00 a.m. With a range of distances from 6, 10 and 25 miles, riders of all levels can participate. We are also engaging young cyclists with a Kids “Tour de Fort”, sponsored by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. This youth program and activity area will be hosted inside the walls of Fort Adams State Park, which will provide a fun and safe environment for kids and parents to participate.

All three ride options start and finish inside Fort Adams State Park. Following the ride, food and beverages will be available for participants. Riders are encouraged to choose the distance that suits their abilities.

“There in Spirit”: Can’t get to Newport, but want to participate? Join us in spirit! Sign up and take a ride with your family and friends wherever you are on Father’s Day morning. Send us a photo and/or tag the Father’s Day Ride! Don’t let the distance keep you from supporting Elliot’s legacy of more, better and safer cycling.

This year, for the first time, no one will miss the ride for financial reasons. There is a “fee waiver request” on the registration form as well as the opportunity for riders to sponsor other riders. Everyone who wants to ride will be able to ride. Our goal is to get more families and individuals of all ages and abilities to participate and to ensure that no one is denied the chance to ride.

Proceeds from this event support Bike Newport’s bicycle safety programs.

Volunteers still needed! Contact Liza.

Please say THANKS to our Father’s Day Ride sponsors and community partners:
IE-CycleCorrigan Financial, Worldways Social Marketing, Newport Daily News, KVH Industries, Newport County YMCA, and Representative Lauren Carson. And to our community partners Empire Tea & Coffee, A Market, Panera, Newport Yogis, Hooley, Mansion Rentals, Newport Bicycle and Ten Speed Spokes.

Exciting RACK ‘em UP donations are rolling in…
Synergy #4 (mixed media cyanoprint by artist Robert Davidson) will be featured at the silent auction.

Wow! We’ve got some amazing items lined up for our Bike Newport Night: RACK ‘em UP! raffle and silent auction. Many local businesses, organizations and individuals are donating exciting items! Original art, bike friendly apparel, tours, cruises, memberships, dinners out, wine, and many manners of self-indulgence await your bids. Plenty to raffle as well, including the GRAND PRIZE donated by Ten Speed Spokes  – a custom-sized SPECIALIZED CROSSROADS. Everyone attending will be eligible to win! Come party with us at Midtown Oyster Bar from 6-9pm on Wednesday, March 19th.

“RACK ‘EM UP!” will raise funds for high-capacity bike racks. With up to 900 cyclists per day at the 2013 Folk Festival, we know that there is great potential to move festivalgoers from cars to bikes. With bikes, Newport’s summer traffic congestion and parking challenges are reduced. But bikes need parking, too! So racks have become this year’s fundraising focus. The high-capacity event racks will be portable, stackable, and available for events throughout the season.

Bike Newport Night 2014 will be hosted by Midtown Oyster Bar with help from Common Fence Music and entertainment by Pier Jump and Los Duderinos.  Adding to the fun is VeloSprint Racing with the RI Bicycle Coalition. What is VeloSprints? A racing simulator that’s super fun, spirited, and competitive.  Hop on a bike and see if you can beat your best friend in a fired-up 30-second sprint. Projected times pitch the excitement while the bands play on. You won’t want to miss this one.

“Join” and spread the word here. Want to help out or donate an item? Email or call (401) 619-4900

Thanks to all the generous local businesses who are helping make Rack ‘Em Up an event to remember!
