May 2: WTF Open Shop Night  • 6:00pm-9:00pm

This month WTF night will be open shop style- come in with your own project or come as a volunteer to help out the shop or another WTF guest. If you’re working on your own bike, we ask for a suggested donation of $5/hour for use of the shop and tools and professional bike mechanic instructor, Ally. But no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

May 2: Ladies Only Ride  • 5:30pm

The TSS Wednesday Night Women’s road ride will be leaving the shop at 5:30. The ride will be a no-drop road ride that will be between 20-35 miles depending with options to meet up with the group later as well as cut out early. Helmets and road bikes required.

May 5: Farm-to-Farm Bike Ride • 2:00pm – 4:00pm

Lovely Middle Road, lined with six family farms, will be CAR FREE so families, friends, and neighbors can enjoy the experience of riding together. On May 5th, from 2-4pm, Middle Road will close to traffic for the first Portsmouth Farm-to-Farm Bike Ride – a short and delightful 4 mile ride for people of all ages and biking and walking abilities. Please join us!

The Bike Garage will be an exclusive and encouraging space for spanish speakers to come and work on bikes. No experience necessary. Bring your own bike or take part in our Earn a Bike Program.

May 10: Ladies Night at the Bike Garage • 4:30-7:00pm

Bike Garage will be an exclusive and encouraging space for female-identifying bicyclists. This night is a time to bring your own bike project to work on with our female instructors, pick out a project to volunteer your help with at the shop, or just to tinker and practice working with the tools. You do not need to have any mechanical knowledge or experience to come – just an interest in learning!

May 12: Cyclofemme Ride to Celebrate Women & Bicycles • 10:00am-2:00pm

This May 12 weekend, we’re joining women around the globe as we band together on bikes to celebrate collective momentum. Inspire one more woman to ride a bike, and we can change the world. #cyclofemme

May 17: Commuter Bike Maintenance Class • 5:30-7:30pm

In preparation for Bike to Work Day, come for our two-hour workshop to learn basic bicycle maintenance for your bike! Commuter Bike Maintenance is a hands-on course to teach you a few basic skills for keeping your bike running in tip-top shape this season. Open to all levels.

We will explain and practice: assessing your bike, patching a flat, lubricating your chain, adjusting brakes, shifting tune-ups, and maintenance schedules.

Bring a bike or even just a bike wheel if you have one. Tools will be provided and a few extra bikes will be available at the workshop for those who would like to practice the repairs.

May 17: Ride of Silence • 6:45pm

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no national sponsors and no registration fees. The ride aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured. Meet in Olneyville at the Recycle-a-Bike shop at 6:45pm.

May 18: Bike to Work Day • 7:00-9:00am

Bike to Work Day is the origin of all National Bike Month events. Started in 1956, this day is a time to try out commuting to work by bike, even if that’s not something you’d normally do. This year, Bike to Work Day is on Friday, May 18th. There will be a big celebration in downtown Providence from 7-9am, in Burnside Park, with free food, booths with community organizations, and a few special guests to applaud your bicycling efforts. There will also be bike trains coming into downtown from all parts of the city, so you don’t have to bike alone!

Other locations around the state holding Bike to Work Day events include Newport (details below) and South Kingstown (at Town Guild, 325 Columbia Street, Wakefield).

May 18: Newport Bike to Work Day • all day

Today is the day to give biking to work a try! Leave your car at home, hit the saddle, and burn calories – not carbon. Bike to Work Day brings the community together to celebrate bicycling as a fun and healthy way to get to work. Bike with family, friends or colleagues to Bike Newport’s Commuter Breakfast.

May 18: Bike to Work Afterparty • 6:00-9:00pm

$20 for non-members, $10 for members (with code)

You like bikes. Chances are, you like either bowling or beer as well.  We’re going to have a silent auction with great prizes, and only a brief speaking program. There will be free bowling, appetizers, and a cash bar.

We invite new and beginner riders to learn how to ride, bike safety skills and getting comfortable on a bike. If you are getting back on your bike after a long time, perhaps never been on a bike but want to give it a try, then this is for you. Let’s get together and talk about any concerns you have and plan a ride!
