May 2: Shifting Into Gear Party • 6:00-8:00pm

You like bikes. Chances are, you like either bowling or beer as well. Now is your chance to celebrate all of the above and the beginning of National Bike Month as well! We’re going to have a silent auction with great prizes, and only a brief speaking program. There will be free bowling, appetizers, and a cash bar. And in addition to celebrating our work with Shifting Into Gear, this event will also kick off National Bike Month in Rhode Island.

May 3: WTF Open Shop Night and Film screening “Ovarian Psycos” • 5:30pm-8:30pm

This month is not your typical WTF Open Shop night! We’ll be wrenching on bikes from 5:30- 6:30pm and then at 6:30, we’ll be screening the 2016 documentary, Ovarian Psycos. The movie will run for about 1 hour and then there will be a discussion about the movie following. There WILL be popcorn and tea. Also, the shop will be set up so that people who would like to keep working on their bikes can do so while the movie is playing.

Ovarian Psycos is about a new generation of fierce, unapologetic and feminist women of color from the Eastside of Los Angeles who confront injustice, build community, and redefine identity through a raucous, irreverently named bicycle crew: The Ovarian Psycos Cycle Brigade.

Are you just getting back on your bike after a long time? Never been on a bike but want to give it a try? Let’s get together and talk about any concerns you have and plan a group ride for newbies.

May 8-25: Bike Month Build-a-Bike class • 5:30pm

This is a hands-on 6-session, 18-hour course that goes into great depth of the most common repairs that are performed in the bike shop. Curious to see the ball bearings inside your hub and headset? Wondering how cable tension affects derailleur performance when you’re shifting? Come on in and find out!

This is a bike mechanics class for all skill levels- no experience required.

Classes in this course build on one another, so please try to attend all or as many sessions as you can to stay up to speed with the content.

May 10: Bike and Walk to School Day • 7:30am

Every other Thursday, the Bike Garage will be an exclusive and encouraging space for female-identifying bicyclists. This night is a time to bring your own bike project to work on with our female instructors, pick out a project to volunteer your help with at the shop, or just to tinker and practice working with the tools. You do not need to have any mechanical knowledge or experience to come – just an interest in learning!

May 13: Rethink Your Ride Bicycle Workshop • 8:00am-2:00pm

It’s time to rethink your ride! CRRI, NBX Bikes and the RI Bike Coalition are kicking off Bike to Work Week with a free Rethink Your Ride Bicycle Workshop on Saturday, May 13 from 8am to 2pm at NBX Bikes, 414 Warren Avenue, East Providence. Join bicycle enthusiasts and learn all the things you will need to know about safe cycling. This fun and interactive workshop is great for beginners, or seasoned riders looking for a refresher. No need to bring your bike, NBX will provide everything you need to learn and get hands-on during the workshop.  CRRI staff will be on-site to show you how you can to bring your bike when you ride the bus and help you plan your routes to work. All workshop participants will have a chance to win the prizes listed below. Rain Date: Saturday, May 20, 2017.

May 13: Cyclofemme Ride to Celebrate Women & Bicycles • 10:00am-1:00pm

This Mother’s Day weekend, join Women Bike RI and female-identifying bicyclists around the globe as we band together on bikes to set a movement in motion! We’ll be celebrating the power of women and bicycles by riding together from Providence to Wicked Tulips Flower Farm in Johnston.

May 17: Commuter Bike Maintenance Class • 5:30-7:30pm

In preparation for Bike to Work Day, come for our two-hour workshop to learn basic bicycle maintenance for your bike! Commuter Bike Maintenance is a hands-on course to teach you a few basic skills for keeping your bike running in tip-top shape this season. Open to all levels.

We will explain and practice: assessing your bike, patching a flat, lubricating your chain, adjusting brakes, shifting tune-ups, and maintenance schedules.

Bring a bike or even just a bike wheel if you have one. Tools will be provided and a few extra bikes will be available at the workshop for those who would like to practice the repairs.

May 17: Ride of Silence • 6:45pm

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no national sponsors and no registration fees. The ride aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injured. Meet in Olneyville at the Recycle-a-Bike shop at 6:45pm.

Since 1999, environmentally-interested people from all walks of life around Providence have come together each month to share conversation, drinks, and food. Through this network, people exchange information and ideas, develop professional and personal friendships, find jobs, develop synergies, help with others’ projects, become more involved through community volunteering, and have lots of fun!

May 19: Bike to Work Day • 7:00-9:00am

Bike to Work Day is the origin of all National Bike Month events. Started in 1956, this day is a time to try out commuting to work by bike, even if that’s not something you’d normally do. This year, Bike to Work Day is on Friday, May 19th. There will be a big celebration in downtown Providence from 7-9am, in Burnside Park, with free food, booths with community organizations, and a few special guests to applaud your bicycling efforts. There will also be bike trains coming into downtown from all parts of the city, so you don’t have to bike alone!

Other locations around the state holding Bike to Work Day events include Newport (details below) and South Kingstown (at Town Guild, 325 Columbia Street, Wakefield).

May 19: Newport Bike to Work Day • all day

Today is the day to give biking to work a try! Leave your car at home, hit the saddle, and burn calories – not carbon. Bike to Work Day brings the community together to celebrate bicycling as a fun and healthy way to get to work. Bike with family, friends or colleagues to Bike Newport’s Commuter Breakfast, 7-9AM and end the day with 4PM bike-friendly announcements and a 5PM city group ride.

May 21: City Riding Class • 1:00-5:00pm

Many people who want to ride more frequently are concerned about riding with cars. Is this you? Would you like to build your confidence while you learn safe road sharing skills? Our city biking classes intend to get you out of the car and into the saddle for local transportation. Join us for a four-hour comprehensive class on city biking. Must haves: a bike, helmet, and basic riding skills.
