Signs Along the East Bay Bike Path

stopsignOver the past few weeks, I’ve come to realize there are a LOT of stop signs missing at the intersections along the East Bay Bike Path.  This got me to thinking… before someone from DEM notices this and just replaces the signs, should we approach them and ask to have a study done to determine whether they should be replaced with yield signs?  yieldsignShould we let them replace the signs, but also add signs facing the motorists reminding them that they must legally stop for pedestrians AND bicycles in the crosswalks?  Or should we just do nothing and be glad that those intersections are now in limbo?

So here’s a quick poll, what do you think?

Control Devices Along East Bay Bike Path

  • Have them replace the stop signs, but convince DEM to add signs facing motorists reminding them they must yield to pedestrians and cyclists in crosswalk. (61%, 19 Votes)
  • We should ask DEM to conduct a study with the hopes of replacing suitable stop signs along the EBBP with yield signs. (32%, 10 Votes)

    How about asking DEM to add signs facing motorists reminding them they must yield to pedestrians and cyclists in crosswalk, but also conduct a study with the hopes of replacing suitable stop signs along the EBBP with yield signs?

    Stop should mean "come to a complete stop". If this is really what you mean then there should be a Stop Sign.

    At Ft. Rucker (Army) the Post Commander took this point of view and had the appropriate Stop Sign replaced with Yield Signs. He told the community that if he really wanted you to stop there would be a Stop Sign… and they would be enforced.

    This could be the start to an attitude of real law enforcement, but more likely that the Stop Sign will be translated as the reader sees fit.

    Stop should mean “come to a complete stop”. If this is really what you mean then there should be a Stop Sign.

    When I say "stop sign", I mean the complete stop kind. Is it your opinion that all crossings along the bike path should have stop signs for cyclists? It's not clear from your comment.

    I agree with Matt – put up signs to remind motorists to yield to pedestrians and bikers AND put up yields signs along the EBBP.

    Put stop signs at all crossings for motorists only; remove traffic signals (too confusing); remove both from bikeways. Put warning signs on bikeways of IMPENDING crossings – "X / AHEAD" would do – placing 100' or so before crossing.

    All crosswalks should be diagonally striped. Pedestrians always have the right-of-way in a crosswalk.

    Bikeways are where vehicular cyclists lose their argument. They thrive on the constant conflict between motored and self propelled. It's NICE to be out of exhaust fumes and frenzied competition for a few minutes.
